Quarto, 36, [1] (publisher's list) pages (all edges uncut) with an illustration from a photograph plus 13 plates (including 4 from drawings by Max Balfour and one by Joseph Pennell), 6 plans (5 of which are folding), and 2 folding hand-coloured illustrations of stained-glass windows by Ernest Godman.
Original overlapping decorated wrappers; edges tanned, a little creased and slightly chipped, with a few tiny closed or sealed tears; first and last leaves (both blank) slightly foxed; light offsetting to the folding plates; overall, an excellent copy.
The publication was produced as part of an effort to stop 'the breaking up of the Hospital, and the consequent destruction of the Almshouses', which dated from the seventeenth century. A prefatory note states that 'While these sheets are being completed in the press, the announcement appears that the Charity Commissioners have decided to dismiss the petition of the Corporation of Trinity House' from proceeding with its plans. 'It will not unreasonably be asked, would the decision of the Commissioners have been the same had there not been so great a public outcry against the destruction of the Hospital'.
