The Flowering Plants and Ferns of New South Wales, with Especial Reference to their Economic Value. Part I [to] Part VII [all published]
Sydney, Government Printer (Charles Potter, Parts I to V, and William Applegate Gullick, Parts VI and VII), for the Department of Mines and Agriculture (Forestry Branch), New South Wales, 1895 to 1898.
Small quarto, seven parts, with a total of 80 pages plus 28 full-page chromolithographs (plus a title leaf in each part, an introductory leaf in the first part, and a 'Note to Subscribers' tipped in at the title page of the second part).
Original printed wrappers (a different colour for each part); top edges (uncut in five cases) a little foxed; front cover of the second part unevenly tanned, with the rear cover slightly creased with two tiny sealed tears; front cover of the last part lightly foxed; these trifling blemishes notwithstanding, this is an uncirculated set in near-fine condition, with the beautiful plates in uniformly fine condition.
The 'Introductory' in the first part consists of only one page, but it is most informative. 'The part now issued is intended to be a fair average specimen of the work, which it is hoped will familiarise our readers with the principal flowering plants and ferns of the Colony. As far as possible, each part will contain illustrations and descriptions of two forest trees (consequently of economic value), and of two shrubs or smaller plants selected without any utilitarian considerations, but because of the beauty or scientific interest in their flowers or foliage. The illustrations will not be overburdened with structural detail, and every effort will be made to secure pictorial accuracy.... In a work of this kind it is but fitting that we should draw attention to the skill of Messrs. E.W. Minchen and H.J.A. Baron, the artists engaged on it. To Mr. R.T. Baker, himself a skilled botanical draughtsman, our warm thanks are due for kind suggestions in regard to the plates.' [7 items].
