Folio, 2 pages (the first two pages of a bifolium) of manuscript text (in a secretarial hand), with an embossed tax stamp; fourth page docketed.

Folded twice; some blotting and offsetting from the signature; two pinholes and a pencilled cross at the top left corner; fourth page a little tanned; a few other signs of age and handling, but overall in excellent condition.

The first page is signed at the head by the King (ink smudged in one place); the second page is countersigned by Chancellor of the Exchequer Nicholas Vansittart, and two other lords commissioners of the Treasury, Edmond Alexander MacNaghten and William Lowther (Viscount Lowther, later 2nd Earl of Lonsdale). The document, dated 1 May 1821, authorises the payment of £76 18s 9d to Andrew Dickie, 'To enable him to pay one Quarter's allowance ended the 5th April 1825 [sic] to the late Servants ...' of the King's brothers William Henry, Duke of Clarence (later William IV); the late Edward, Duke of Kent (father of Queen Victoria); Ernest, Duke of Cumberland (later King of Hanover); Frederick Augustus [i.e. Augustus Frederick], Duke of Sussex; and Frederick Adolphus [i.e. Adolphus Frederick], Duke of Cambridge. Their former servants are not named. The sum is to be paid from monies 'which have arisen from and by the Reversion Duty of Customs of Four Pounds and one half Pound per Centum at Barbadoes and the Leeward Islands'. Andrew Dickie was a confidential clerk (and later partner) at Coutts bank, and handled matters relating to the Privy Purse.
