Quarto, 574 pages with 26 illustrations and a map plus a colour frontispiece portrait, 12 colour plates and a large folding map (Flinders' 1804 map of Australia) in an endpocket.

Cloth lettered and decorated in gilt on the spine, and decorated in blind on the front cover; a fine copy.

'Edited and with an introduction by Anthony J. Brown and Gillian Dooley. Foreword by Witgar Hitchcock. Preface by Paul Brunton.' This is the first published transcription of the private journal kept by Flinders 'from the first day of his detention at Isle of France (Mauritius) in December 1803 and continues after his return to England in 1810. The final entry is dated 10 July 1814, nine days before his death. It has previously appeared as a facsimile of the handwritten original held by the Mitchell Library ... It also contains eight appendices, an introduction and notes by the editors and an index' (from the original prospectus). One of only 700 copies thus; an additional 150 numbered copies were issued in quarter leather and cloth.
