An autograph postcard initialled 'E.W.' by Evelyn Waugh, addressed to Terence Concannon in relation to some of his shorter publications
A postcard (89 × 138 mm), with the printed return address ('From Mr. Evelyn Waugh, Piers Court, Nr. Dursley, Glos.') at the head of the verso.
Card a little marked, rubbed and creased; pencilled number on the recto; overall, in very good condition.
The card is addressed in Waugh's hand on the recto to Terence Concannon Esq. in Sheffield; it is postmarked Dursley, 8 October 1952. The verso is inscribed and initialled by Waugh: 'Thank you for your letter & your continued interest. 1) Preface to "Bassington" 1947. 2) I wrote four articles for "Life", all but one of which were reprinted here in "Tablet" or "Month". That one was for "Fanfare" in 1946. If this is unprocurable I can lend you a copy. E.W.'. The first item on Waugh's list is his introduction to the 1947 Eyre and Spottiswoode edition of Saki's 'The Unbearable Bassington'. The postcard is offered together with a similar item addressed to Concannon, postmarked Dursley, 30 December 1955. The verso is inscribed and initialled by Waugh: 'Very many thanks for your kind Christmas wishes which I cordially reciprocate. E.W.'. An unpublished letter from Waugh to Concannon in the collection of Roy Davids was sold at auction in 2011. Waugh gives guidance about the viability of starting a writing career at the time and answers two questions about Concannon's project of writing about him. He advises him that the present is a bad time for a young man to begin a literary career ('do not think me unsympathetic. I am merely warning you of what seem to me very grave obstacles in your way'). The cataloguer notes at the end of this informative entry that 'It seems that Concannon may have taken Waugh's advice: he does not appear to have pursued a writing career'. [2 items].
