The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life
London, John Murray, 1890 ('Sixth edition, with additions and corrections to 1872 | (Thirty-ninth Thousand)')/ 1872/ 1859.
Octavo, xxii, 458, 32 (publisher's catalogue dated April 1889) pages plus a folding diagram.
Green cloth stamped in gilt and blind; corners a little bumped, with slight wear at the head of the spine; free endpapers offset; two openings discoloured by old acidic inserts (no longer present); front hinge cracking (but very firm); scattered foxing (generally light, but a little heavier near the endpapers and folding diagram); a few other minor signs of age and use; a very good copy.
The sixth edition was the first to use the term 'evolution', and dropped the word 'On' from the title. It was also a cheaper popular edition, with smaller format and type (Freeman, page 23). This copy is from a later impression, and incorporates the final corrections made prior to Darwin's death in 1872. Not least, Chapter VII was entirely new to the sixth edition ('Miscellaneous Objections to the Theory of Natural Selection', pages 168-204). Freeman 436.
