East London, Printed by the Standard Printing Co., 1902 (revised edition).

Small octavo, 48 pages.

Saddle-stapled title-wrappers a little marked and creased, with associated creasing to the last six leaves; staples rusty, staining a little the paper in contact with them; overall, a very good copy of what we presume to be a rare item.

The preface states that this book 'contains the various orders which have from time to time appeared in C.D.F., L. of C., and C.C.F. orders regarding D.M.T.'s; and also in circular memorandums from heads of departments in South Africa regarding District Mounted Troops. Fresh Orders must necessarily often be issued, and spaces are left in the book for their insertion. H.S. Scott Harden, Capt., O.C. Colonial Forces, No. 12 Area. Aliwal North, February 1st, 1902'. Pages 43-44 contain a list of officers 'appointed by the colonial Government to command District Mounted Troops in the Areas not yet included in Colonial divisions'. Area 11, comprising the Districts of Colesberg, Hanover, and Steynsburg (inclusive of Norvals Pont) is under the command of 'Capt. S.A. White'. This item is not identified as such, but we know it comes from the dispersed collection of Samuel Albert White (1870-1954), the South Australian well-known as an ornithologist and conservationist, but 'During the South African War he had two tours of duty and was temporarily promoted captain, a title he used thereafter' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
