The Bookplate. A Magazine for Book Craftsmen. Official Organ of The English Bookplate Society. Number One, New Series, July 1924

London, The Favil Press (for The English Bookplate Society), July 1924.

Octavo, 19 pages with a full-page four-colour frontispiece and 6 illustrations plus 2 tipped-in plates (one engraved, one halftone).

Saddle-sewn overlapping pictorial wrappers a little creased around the edges; some faint offsetting; an excellent copy.

The halftone tipped-in bookplate was designed by Henri van Raalte for the Adelaide bookseller John Lloyd Preece (1895-1969). Preece's name and address also appear on the loosely-inserted EPS 'Exchange List No. 1' (1924).

Fuller's 'A Bibliography of Bookplate Literature' (page 30) records a further two issues in this series, which succeeded the five numbers published sporadically by the editor's father, James Guthrie, at his Pear Tree Press between 1920 and 1923. Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent.
