A collection of 25 bookplates by Allan Jordan (12 of them signed)

Unobtrusive evidence of previous mounting on the versos of four plates, with fingermarks to the bottom corners of another; all other plates are in fine condition (with 'Allan Jordan | X1 | Australia' inkstamped on the versos of four of them).

All plates are recorded by Peake. Allan Holder Jordan (1898-1982), artist and art educator at Swinburne Art School in Melbourne, produced 71 bookplates between 1939 and 1958 (Robert Littlewood: 'Ten Bookplates by Allan Jordan', 2014). The plates in this group are predominantly wood engravings, and there are no duplicates. All but two are personal, and they include ones for John Gartner, S.V. Hagley (two), Karl Weidenhofer, Helen Barclay, Angela Boleyn, and Ila Leland Massy Burnside. Offered together with:

1. A duplicate typescript (quarto, 3 pages, rectos only) of a short talk or article on Jordan's bookplates, attributed to H.B. Muir.

2. Two original ink drawings on card, intended for reproduction in Frank Clune's 'The Greatest Liar on Earth' (Hawthorn Press, 1945). The larger one (sheet size 185 × 125 mm) is a head-and-shoulders portrait of Louis de Rougemont (the fabulist and spurious adventurer, born Henri Louis Grin); the other one is a tropical island scene (157 × 98 mm).

3. Three process prints of artwork by Jordan (two wood engravings of birds, and a linocut of a maritime scene, now a little cropped).

Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent. [A quantity].
