Four etched bookplates by Ella Dwyer (two signed)

Four etched bookplates by Ella Dwyer (two signed)

One plate has old stamp hinges on the reverse; another has a short crease to one corner tip; overall, an excellent group.

Ella Margaret Dwyer (1887-1979), Hobart-born but a longtime resident of Sydney, was a printmaker and bookplate designer. Fellow bookplate artist George Perrottet contributed an article, 'The Etched Bookplates of Ella Dwyer', to the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers' Year Book in 1942. The bookplates offered here are all recorded by Peake, and are for four women: Margaret Dorothy Campbell, May Ferns, Elizabeth V. Mocatta, and Ivy Young (the last two are signed in pencil by Dwyer, and the last one has the Scottish subject identified in ink on the reverse). Three are printed in brown inks, and one in green; all four make use of surface tone.

Offered together with:

1. A Christmas card and cover from an elderly Dwyer (in a Roseville nursing home) in 1978 to Harry Muir, inscribed with her greetings to 'your wonderful wife & your clever children', and asking him some questions about the Perrottet article referred to above.

2. Enclosed with the card is an original two-colour linocut bookplate designed by Perrottet for Dwyer in 1932, inscribed 'Merry Christmas' (possibly by Dwyer, but at a somewhat earlier date).

3. A duplicate typescript checklist of Dwyer's bookplates between 1927 and 1944 (foolscap folio, one page).

4. A halftone print of another one of Dwyer's bookplates.

Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent. [A small quantity].
