A group of 28 bookplates by Norman Lindsay (one signed)
Two plates have residue from previous mounting on the reverse; one has a few light creases; all others are in fine condition.
All of the bookplates are recorded by Peake. Most of the plates are relief prints from process blocks, but two have the pencilled annotation 'N. Lindsay | Wood' on the reverse. These two are the very early plates for H.R. Conant (1897) and R. Parkinson (circa 1898), and appear to be later impressions. The signed plate, for Janet Lindsay, is presented in a plain card bifolium inscribed 'Wishing you a very happy Xmas and peace in the coming year, F.C.V.L.'. This is Frederick Claude Vivian Lane (1879-1969), master printer and the compiler of 'The Bookplates of Norman Lindsay', published by Harry Muir's Wakefield Press in Adelaide in 1944. He describes the plate in the following terms in the book: 'A very fresh and spontaneous plate is a line drawing for Janet Lindsay, the artist's daughter. The design depicts a nude wearing a mortar board and mounted on a spirited Pegasus leaping over a ponderous tome. The plate in all its delightfulness and simplicity cleverly suggests the power of poetic inspiration to over-ride learning' (page 11). The group contains an unsigned duplicate of the Janet Lindsay plate (printed on different paper stock), and two variants of the plate for F.C.V. Lane. These are 'Naked girl looking at mermaid (coloured)' and 'Girl looking at mermaid' (Peake 3060 and 3061, respectively). Examples of all sixteen bookplates mounted in Lane's book are present in this collection. Provenance: H.B. (Harry) Muir (1909-1992), bookseller, publisher and bookplate collector; by descent.
