The Voyages of Captain James Cook round the World, illustrated with Maps and Numerous Engravings on Wood and Steel
London, John Tallis & Company, [1852].
Quarto, two volumes, iii-xx, 596 and xii (last blank), [3]-556 pages with numerous wood-engraved illustrations in the text, plus an engraved pictorial title to the first volume, 5 steel-engraved plates, and 12 hand-coloured double-page engraved maps (but without both half-titles and the engraved title for the second volume).
Contemporary half morocco and marbled papered boards a little rubbed; spine tooled in blind in compartments and lettered in gilt; all edges marbled; minimal conservation to both front inner hinges and the leading margin of the portrait of Banks; plates slightly shaved; a few leaves adjacent to the endpapers have a narrow light tidemark around the edges (caused by the paste used in the rebind); regular tiny pencilled emphases; a couple of unobtrusive marks, with tiny sealed tears to a few margins; overall a very good set with, in each volume, the trimmed armorial bookplate ('Deus Amici et Nos') of (possibly) John Bogert Pell (1800-1882), a sea captain from New York, and the later signature of R.M. Pell.
A collected edition of Cook's three voyages. The attractive maps, by John Rapkin, feature vignette illustrations by various artists, and the plates include portraits of Cook and Sir Joseph Banks, and a version of the famous image of Cook's death. The text follows the edition authorised by the Admiralty. Beddie 152. [2 items].
