Handatlas über alle Theile der Erde und über das Weltgebäude

Gotha, Justus Perthes, 1869 [fifth edition, eleventh issue?].

Folio (376 × 250 mm), double-page half-title with contents; double-page title; 83 double-page engraved maps (numbered as 52; the '84 Karten' of the edition statement includes the title) (all guard-mounted, and all printed rectos only), plus [2], 10 pages of text ('Vorbericht zu ... Zehnte Auflage, 1868').

Later half morocco (replacing the original leather) and original cloth sides; new endpapers; cloth a little scuffed and faded, and lightly worn at the edges; occasional light foxing, generally confined to the margins; title leaf and a few maps more heavily foxed; some leaves browned at the corners from the old leather turn-ins; a very good copy (internally in excellent condition).

The Complete Edition ('Vollständige Ausgabe') with 84 sheets (an abridged edition with only 63 sheets was also published). The majority of the maps are attractively hand-coloured; a small number are printed in colours. Three are undated; all others are dated either 1868 or 1869.

The numbering of editions of Stieler's 'Handatlas' is problematic. The letterpress section at the end of this volume is entitled 'Vorbericht zu Stieler's Hand-Atlas. Zehnte Auflage, 1868' [Preface to ... Tenth issue, 1868'), suggesting that this is a later issue. However, the maps were regularly revised, and copies of the atlas were issued with the most up-to-date versions available. We have handled examples with maps dated several years before and after the date on the title page. The Centenary Edition of 1925 is referred to as the Tenth Edition by Professor Dr Hermann Haack, who supervised its revision. In the preface he outlines the publication history of the Handatlas, but his 'editions' are extremely loosely defined. He mentions the '5th [edition] (1866 to 68; 84 sheets), and the 6th (1871 to 75; 90 sheets)', neatly skipping our 1869 edition. We presume he would consider it part of the fifth edition, but surely its revised text and maps make it a new edition ..
