Original half green morocco and cloth, later rebacked in green morocco, retaining the original backstrip (sunned and a little rubbed); all edges gilt; corners rubbed and lightly worn; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy.
An early owner has amended the title page thus: 'with special notes on the maps by A.H. Watters and additional maps (1920-22) inserted showing the post-war boundaries'. His typewritten notes (foolscap folio, four pages) outlining the differences between this 1909 edition and the 1873 edition are loosely inserted. There are five additional maps (all Johnston imprints) tipped in at relevant spots. Loosely inserted are prospectuses for the 1924 and 1928 editions of the 'Handy Royal Atlas' (both a little used). The latter includes a large sample map and a short illustrated explanatory note on 'How the Handy Royal Atlas is produced'.
