Original cloth a little marked and rubbed, and lightly worn at the extremities; boards slightly bowed; trifling signs of use and age; a very good copy (internally excellent).
The superior full-cloth binding; most copies were bound in quarter cloth and printed papered boards. Mounted on the front flyleaf is a proof of a contemporary review from the local Gawler newspaper, 'The Bunyip', 29 July, 1910 (slightly creased and torn). In contains the following paragraph: 'Needless to say, the value and interest of the volume are much enhanced by the pictorial department. Of special attraction are the photographs of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen King (who settled at Kingsford in 1839) ... and their son Stephen King, jun., who first saw the light in 1842 [sic], also at Kingsford' (the family property, on the North Para River about 10 km from Gawler). Stephen King Jr (1841-1915), sketcher, explorer and surveyor, accompanied John McDouall Stuart on the first transcontinental expedition in 1861-63. He later worked as a surveyor under George Goyder in Darwin, and on the Overland Telegraph. Biographical details of father and son appear on page 283, and there are half-page portraits of Mr and Mrs Stephen King Sr, two daughters and Stephen King Jr on pages 390, 395 and 400 respectively. Provenance: Stephen King Jr, with his receipt 'To Subscription for Photo-Blocks' (on two and a half pages) in 'The History of Gawler' loosely inserted.
