Glory of Life
London, 'printed and published by Christopher Sandford, Francis J. Newbery and Owen Rutter at the Golden Cockerel Press', [January] 1934.
Large quarto , 36 pages (printed in red and black on paper by Joseph Batchelor and Sons) with 14 illustrations (including the title) plus a full-page frontispiece (all illustrations are wood-engravings by Robert Gibbings).
Original quarter vellum and beige cloth, the vellum lettered and ruled in gilt; top edge gilt, others uncut; cloth lightly marked; faint offsetting from a few of the illustrations; slight loss to the bottom corner of one leaf (probably a production flaw); a near-fine copy.
Number 118 of 275 copies thus, plus two printed on vellum. Chanticleer 91: 'Probably the finest example of Robert Gibbings' book illustration. His magnificent title-page engraved in wood was an innovation, and titles of this kind would enhance the beauty of many publishers' books'.
