The First Temptation of Saint Anthony
New York, Ives Washburn, 1930.
Large octavo, [viii], 255 pages plus 11 full-page illustrations by Ilse Bischoff ('printed from the original wood engravings').
Black cloth lettered and decorated in silver (albeit now barely visible); top edge dyed, leading edge uncut; cloth a little dusty, spine lightly sunned, top edge a little marked; a very good copy.
One of 2000 copies. Provenance: the bookseller Mary Maydwell Martin (1915-1973), with her signature, dated 1939, the year 'she won the Tormore prize for English Literature' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'). The later armorial bookplate of L.S. Walters is on the pastedown: Lance Walters, an industrial chemist, was head brewer at the South Australian Brewing Company in the 1950s.
