The Digger. A Study in Democracy

Sydney, Angus and Robertson, 1945.

Octavo, 52 pages plus 5 plates (reproducing artwork by Bowles, Dyson, Hele and Lambert).

Papered boards; trifling surface abrasion to the front top corner; an excellent copy.

The front free endpaper is inscribed in pencil 'With Compliments (after reading "Searchlights in Australia"). Canberra ACT 15/5/46. A.G. Butler'. Presumably the reference is to 'Talks given in Radio Programmes: Searchlights on Life and Searchlights on Australia, by Various Speakers' (cover title). Trove records this title, published by the Australian Broadcasting Commission in 1944 (octavo, 63 pages), with contributions by Charles Edwin Woodrow Bean (1879-1968), Alexander Boyce Gibson (1900-1972), Sir Walter Murdoch (1874-1970), and Lloyd Ross (1901-1987). The author is best remembered for his monumental work, 'The Official History of the Australian Army Medical Services in the War of 1914-1918' (three volumes, 1930 to 1943).
