Three photographs of groups of Australian recruits at what we believe to be Ballarat Training Camp at the Ballarat Showgrounds during the First World War

Three uniform-format vintage gelatin silver photographs (image size 108 × 150 mm), on individual card mounts with the inkstamp credit of 'S.A. Mayor, 39 Morrah Street, Parkville'. Each print has a number in the negative, respectively 56, 84 and 191; in the latter, one of the fascia boards carries an advertisement for 'Jelbart Brothers Ballarat. We Scavenge Engines'.

The mounts are foxed, marked and bumped at the extremities, with one small corner piece missing; the photographs are in excellent condition.

We have not seen Mayor's work before, but if these three examples are anything to go by, he has an appealing idiosyncratic style when it comes to group portraiture. [3 items].
