These copies [are] designated by the name and number of the Spirit' (this is copy 50: Furcas). 'This present work was composed with several aims in mind, the chief of which was to trace the emergence of "Goetia" [sorcery] into the English language manuscripts with which it is now so closely identified. By comparing the known sources and influences, it is possible to observe the subtle and not-so-subtle changes; the errors, omissions, inclusions, and other alterations that together combine to create the text as we know it' (at the end of the introductory chapter).
