'The Flinders Ranges'. An album containing 41 original photographs documenting a motoring trip to the Flinders Ranges in 1932

Oblong folio (approximately 245 × 330 mm), comprising plain thin textured card covers and 12 stiff card leaves with 41 mounted gelatin silver photographs (various sizes, the largest approximately 105 × 150 mm, the smallest 125 × 50 mm).

The cord-bound contents are loosely inserted in a padded cloth cover; leaves a little cockled, with the outer ones slightly creased and lightly marked; trifling signs of use and age; overall in excellent condition.

The mounts are captioned in ink with the location of the photographs, including Pichi Richi Pass, Willow Waters, Wilpena Pound, Angorichina and Arkaba Stations, Parachilna Gorge, Clare, Linwood and Burra. Interspersed throughout are short quotations from nature poems by Australian poets, including Dorothea Mackellar, Adam Lindsay Gordon, Arthur Patchett Martin, John Bernard O'Hara, and James Cuthbertson. The album is titled and inscribed on the verso of the first leaf 'To Dr and Mrs Linn with appreciations and all good wishes for Christmas and the New Year, from J.R. and G.W. Andrew. Xmas 1932'. Several months earlier, Reverend J.R. Andrew and Dr Leslie Wadmore Linn were both elected to the Board of Managers of the Onkaparinga District Hospital at Woodside in the Adelaide Hills ('The Advertiser', Tuesday 6 September 1932). In addition to the evocative scenery, the photographs include images of the two intrepid couples and their vehicles (10), working mules and camels encountered during the journey (4), and various views of Angorichina Hostel, a TB sanatorium which opened in 1927 (6, including a small weather station complete with 'sunshine recorder').
