Black buckram lettered in gilt on the spine and front cover, top edge gilt; buckram a little rubbed, marked and unevenly sunned, with trifling wear at the extremities, and a small paper label in the top left-hand corner of the front cover; endpapers and tissue-guards a little foxed; front free endpaper a little marked; trifling signs of age and use; a very good copy (the plates in fine condition).

Sir Charles Alfred Ballance (1856-1936) was already an eminent surgeon when, from '1899 to 1901 he was engaged in studying the processes of degeneration and regeneration of the peripheral nerves and in 1901 he published the results in collaboration with Sir James Purves-Stewart. The rest of his life was spent in experimenting with the anastomizing of nerves' (Royal College of Surgeons of England website).

Sir James Purves-Stewart (1869-1949) published 'Diagnosis of Nervous Diseases' in 1906, 'which, forty-one years later, reached its tenth English edition and which was translated into French, German, Spanish and Arabic' (Royal College of Physicians website). Provenance: 'Societas Medica Londinensis', with its bookplate mounted on the front pastedown inscribed in ink 'Presented by the Authors'. Above it is the ownership signature (April 2011) of eminent Australian neurosurgeon Professor Donald Simpson AO (1927-2018).
