Salem, Sebastian C. Clark (lithographed by Strobridge & Co., Cincinnati, Ohio), 1876 ('Second Edition and seventh thousand carefully, and critically revised and brought down to 1876'; also described as the 'Centinnial [sic] Edition')/ 1871.

A chromolithographic scroll on paper, mounted on linen with wooden rollers either end (as issued), printed surface 670 × 6524 mm.

The original varnish is now uniformly lightly tanned; some trifling chips to the printed surface; a light tidemark to the bottom right-hand corner (affecting a triangular section 170 × 150 mm); overall an excellent example in this more desirable format. Some later editions were issued case-bound, in leporello form.

'The author is fully aware of the difficulties and uncertainties of any system of Chronology extant. After mature deliberation and advice, it is deemed prudent and better to base this work upon the accepted system of "Archbishop Usher" [beginning with Adam and Eve in 4004 BC], upon which a large majority of all our histories and chronological dates are founded. To disturb this system would produce great confusion, with no good results, as the general outlines of history and the relation of one period to another, can be as correctly obtained upon this system, as upon any other, and hinders no one from extending the stream of time back, to suit the chronology of the Septuagint; the claims of the Vedas and Puranas of India; or the fabulous uncertainties of Chinese tradition' (author's comment printed on the scroll). An extraordinary colour-illustrated panorama, that now appears to say much more about its own time than any other. It owes its survival to having been rolled up for much of its 144 years. The most recent owner has further added to its ability to survive by having a very large glazed display case made to order to house it. A section approximately two metres long is visible, with small external handles enabling the rollers to be turned to change the scene. The cabinet is not included in the price, as it may be more trouble than it's worth when it comes to shipping it, but enquiries are most welcome.
