So We Take Comfort

So We Take Comfort

London, Heinemann, 1965.

Octavo, xii, 283 pages plus 14 pages of plates.

Cloth lightly marked and mottled, with a thin unevenly dyed strip on the rear cover (a minor production flaw in the cloth); a very good copy.

Dame Enid Muriel Lyons (1897-1981), politician, was the first woman to enter the Australian Parliament and the first to become a member of Cabinet (in December 1949). In her introduction she states that 'This is not a biography. It is the story of a marriage; of two people who loved each other and set out on the great adventure when she was only seventeen and he twice that age'. The adventure included a dozen children and seven years as the Prime Minister's wife (1932-39; Joseph Lyons died in office on 7 April 1939). The frontispiece portrait of the couple in this copy is inscribed 'Best wishes, Enid Lyons. Feb 9th 1978'. Mounted on the blank portion in the centre of the title page is a block of four stamps issued to commemorate Joseph Lyons as Prime Minister; the stamps and title page carry two 'First Day Of Issue | Adelaide | 26 March 1975' postmarks (applied in situ).
