Sir Arthur Charles Clarke CBE FRAS (1917-2008), British science fiction writer, science writer and futurist, inventor, undersea explorer, television series host, and co-author of the screenplay for the 1968 film '2001: A Space Odyssey' (Wikipedia). In this early work for children, he is described on the title page as 'Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society, 1946-7, 1950-3'.
