Anzac Memorial
Sydney, Returned Soldiers Association of New South Wales, 25 April 1917 (second edition)/ 1916.
Octavo, 512 pages with 13 vignette illustrations and 49 pages of illustrations (nearly all from photographs), 9 small maps, a Roll of Honour (214 pages), and 13 pages of advertisements.
Original light blue gilt-decorated cloth over colour-pictorial cream card covers (with text inside and out); cloth a little rubbed at the extremities and sunned on the spine; an excellent copy.
The illustrations comprise a frontispiece portrait of 'Matron Ida M. Greaves, Royal Red Cross (1st Class)'; a Gallery of Honour (40 pages, with 272 portraits, including 11 full-page portraits of VC winners); and 11 pages of assorted portraits and views. The Roll of Honour of 'Soldiers & Sailors, Officers and Men of the Australasian Imperial Expeditionary Forces, Died on Service and Missing from August 4th, 1914 to February 8th, 1917' is now 214 pages long; it was only 28 pages a year earlier. The Editor's Note (on page 479) contains significant variations from the khaki cloth-bound version of the first edition. 'The Roll of Honour this year collects nearly thirty thousand names of Australians of six States who have died on service'; the 1916 edition listed only those from NSW. The paragraph about variant editions now states: 'Four editions of this book are published: (I) in plain covers, at 6s.; (II) in cloth, 10s. 6d.; (III) Edition de Luxe, in morocco, boxed, with additional material, £2 2s.; (IV) Royal Edition, in quarto size, edition limited to 50 copies, £10 10s.'. Dornbusch 206; Fielding and O'Neill, page 239.
