A later handwritten note taped to the verso states this is the 'Leongatha Group - Heliopolis (at YMCA Hut') in January 1916, and that the image was published in 'A Valley in France [World War I Letters to his Parents and Sister while on Active Service from Egypt, France and Great Britain, 1915-1918]' (on page 12). The letters were written by 2821 Corporal Thomas Clair Whiteside (1893-1959); the book was published in 1999 by his sister Elizabeth. Californian-born Whiteside enlisted on 17 July 1915. He was initially with the 22nd Battalion, before being transferred to the 57th Battalion on 23 February 1916, and to the 59th Battalion on 15 March 1916. The note on the verso identifies all those present: a very young-looking Corporal Whiteside is standing third from the right in the back row.
