Item #117217 Australian Corps News Sheet [drop-title masthead]. Number 14

Australian Corps News Sheet [drop-title masthead]. Number 14

[London], Australian Imperial Force, [January] 1919.

Foolscap folio, [3] pages (two columns per page, on two loose leaves).

Newsprint a little foxed, tanned and creased where folded; trifling marginal chips, with one sealed short tear; overall in very good condition.

The first headline is 'Repatriation and Demobilisation', and the first page and a half deal with all matters pertaining (not least, 'A.W.L. During Demobilisation'). A full column of sport is then followed by 'Extracts from London Newspapers of Recent Date' (one and a half columns, mostly discussing details of demobilisation, and giving an idea of the enormity of the task: 'Whereas previously the number was 8,000 daily, the figures during the last few days have averaged 20,000'). The last half-column is 'The Australian Soldier. Extract from Pamphlet. (As seen through Italian eyes)'. This alone makes the item worth fighting for: 'Tall, slim, and of a vividly blonde complexion, fair-haired, blue-eyed, an impetuous swing in their walk - even their Spanish Brigand-like hat seems to sway in impulsive, ardent unison with it ...' - and it gets a lot better than that! The News Sheet was published from 4 September 1918 until April 1919 (issue Number 19).
