Item #117026 The 'Dreadnought' of the Darling. C. E. W. BEAN.
The 'Dreadnought' of the Darling

The 'Dreadnought' of the Darling

London, Alston Rivers Limited, 1911 [first edition].

Octavo, xiv, 362 pages plus a frontispiece (still with its tissue-guard), a map, 8 pages of plates, and a folding map at the rear.

Original red cloth lettered in black on the front cover and in gilt on the spine; spine lightly sunned, with a small ink mark (well clear of the lettering); a few leading edges appear to have been cut with a blade that needed sharpening; an excellent copy.

'In writing the articles which were afterwards republished in "On the Wool Track", the Author found that it was necessary to discard many of his most interesting memories of visits to the back country because they could not possibly be referred to the wool industry. The Darling River basin, its history, the water under it, the mines around it, the navigation along it, were left at the time to be dealt with in the articles on which this book is founded' (the author, in his Acknowledgment).
