The Romantic Ballet in Lithographs of the Time

London, Faber and Faber, 1938.

Quarto, 316 pages with several illustrations and 81 tipped-in plates ('full-page collotype reproductions, nine of which have been stencilled in colour').

Watered pink silk, lettered in gilt on a purple panel on the spine; top edge gilt, others uncut (with a few of the leading edges lightly chipped); covers very lightly sunned at the extremities, with a trifling bump to one bottom edge; essentially a fine copy with the dustwrapper a little torn and chipped along the top edge, with minor loss.

The half-title is signed by both authors. 'This sumptuous book is no less than a collection of nearly every available lithograph of the Romantic Ballet. Here are all the great ballerinas, Taglioni, Fanny Elssler, Carlotta Grisi, Fanny Cerrito, Lucile Grahn, Carolina Rosati, as alive and vital as Baronova or Markova today ... for each print shows the dancer in action' (dustwrapper blurb). The period covered is from 1832 until shortly before 1850.
