Woodcut Book-Plates. Foreword by Lionel Lindsay

Sydney, 'Privately Printed' (for the Author) by The Beacon Press, 1934.

Quarto, 240, [4] (acknowledgements, blank, colophon, blank) pages with numerous illustrations (of bookplates, 2 of which are hand-coloured) and 133 tipped-in bookplates (28 are signed, 12 of which are in one or more colours; a further 53 unsigned ones are in one or more colours).

Quarter parchment and marbled papered boards, top edge gilt, others uncut; covers very slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities; a few leaves with light offsetting from bookplates or paste; two consecutive leaves a little creased; an excellent copy with the pictorial dustwrapper sunned, chipped and torn with minor loss, with an old (discoloured) tape repair to the front hinge.

Number 49 of only 70 signed copies of the De Luxe Edition. A Standard Edition of 210 signed copies was also issued; it contained far fewer plates (one example we have sold contained 108 tipped-in bookplates, with 14 signed, and a further 41 in more than one colour). Signed bookplates include examples by Adrian Feint (4); G.D. Perrottet (2); Rose Reinhold (2); George Collingridge (1); L. Roy Davies (3); Vikta Vavra (2); W.F. Mahoney (4); Philip M. Litchfield (3); W.F. Hopson (1); Jaroslav Dobrovolsky (3); and Bruno da Osimo (5). Provenance: Johannes Larsen, with his small name-stamp on the title page and his pictorial bookplate on the front pastedown (this Australian bookplate and its artist, M.G. Wood, do not appear in Peake's 'Australian Personal Bookplates').
