White and Black in Australia

London, SPCK (for the National Missionary Council of Australia), 1935.

Octavo, 174 pages plus 16 plates.

Flush-cut pictorial card covers slightly marked, with a tiny chip from the front bottom corner; spine renewed with fabric tape; a very good copy (internally fine).

The bulk of the work is by the editor, with lengthy contributions (25 pages each) by A.P. Elkin (Anthropology and the Australian Aboriginal) and J.W. Bleakley (The Aborigines - Past and Present Treatment). Reverend John Stafford Needham (1875-1942) was, for the 20 years before his death, chairman and principal organiser for the Australian Board of Missions, a Church of England missionary organisation. This volume covers missionary activity by all denominations. Provenance: Friedrich Wilhelm Albrecht (1894-1984), Lutheran missionary, with his contemporary signature (dated 1936) on the flyleaf. In April 1926, Pastor Albrecht replaced Carl Strehlow (1871-1922) as mission superintendent at Hermannsburg in Central Australia. In '1952 the family moved to Alice Springs. There Albrecht ministered to urban Aborigines and visited workers on cattle stations' before retiring to Adelaide in 1962. His son Paul succeeded him as field-superintendent at Hermannsburg in 1963 ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
