An autograph letter signed by Robert Graves (1895-1985, British poet, novelist, critic and mythographer) to a Mrs Oswald, in return thanks for her congratulatory letter about a poorly reviewed radio broadcast

One page quarto, 7 January 1955, on Graves's Palma de Mallorca, Spain, letterhead, complete with the original envelope, addressed by Graves to Mrs Oswald, Kingskerswell, South Devon, 'Inglaterra' (and postmarked both in Spain and Devon). The letter is in fine condition. Graves thanks Mrs Oswald for her letter about the broadcast (apparently one on charms and rhymes, on the BBC), then continues: 'The only press comment I got was from the "Croydon Advertiser"; it was that mine was the worst broadcasting feature of December & that I used a flat dismal tone and was unpardonably critical of a wonderful book! If the Opies [authors of 'The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes'] agree and break off relations with me, I shall nevertheless send them your versions for their next book.' In the final paragraph he notes that 'During the last war I lived at Galmpton [in Devon] & occasionally came out your way'. The postscript is seemingly apropos of nothing: 'Mary Hamilton is a well-known figure in Scottish ballads. She got into trouble with a Czar of Russia not a King of Scotland, it seems'.
