Original dark blue morocco-grain cloth with the original printed paper title-label on the spine; cloth lightly marked and bumped, with minimal wear to the corners; spine (and label) a little tanned, with the label slightly chipped; stub-mounted map reinserted upside down, with a few trifling splits to folds expertly sealed); a near-fine copy of this rare and important work.

Joseph Cross was a London cartographer; his 'volume is the earliest work relating to the inland exploration of Western Australia. The book consists of the journals and reports of over twenty exploratory expeditions into the country around the Swan River settlement undertaken by, among others, the colony's Surveyor General, John Septimus Roe, and the artist and Assistant Surveyor, Robert Dale. Cross edited their journals for publication and draughted a fine map from them which is included in the volume' (Wantrup). Ferguson 1664; Wantrup 151.
