My African Journey

London, Hodder and Stoughton, 1908 [first edition, Colonial issue, with an asterisk in gilt near the foot of the spine].

Octavo, xiv (last blank), 226, [18] (publisher's catalogue, including a title leaf) pages plus 61 plates (from photographs, on 47 leaves, versos blank) and 3 maps (one tinted, all with routes marked in red).

Colour-pictorial red cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and blocked in black, blue and grey on the front board; covers slightly flecked, sunned and marked; rear cover slightly scored; short split to the centre of the head of the spine, with a tiny snag to the foot; top edge a little foxed, bottom edge uncut; flyleaves offset, with a neat early ownership signature and some light scoring to the front one; some of the tipped-in plates had become detached and were proud of the leading edge of the book block, and although all are now expertly reinserted, a handful have tiny imperfections to the leading edge (and one has a few tiny chips and light creasing the the bottom edge); minimal signs of use and age internally; overall, an excellent copy.

Cohen A27.2; Woods/ICS A12aa; Langworth, pages 80-89 (calling in error for '46 unnumbered photo pages' on page 81).
