The Simple Jaggajay. Written and pictured by Harold Gaze

Melbourne, Whitcombe & Tombs Limited, [1919].

Quarto, [32] pages with 8 line illustrations plus 3 tipped-in full-page plates (2 in colour); most pages have a green decorative border around the text and illustration.

Ribbon-bound slightly overlapping thin card covers (trimmed a little from the original size to tidy up chipped edges, but the edges of the saddle-stapled text are uncut); large colour plate mounted on the front panel (the same image as the first tipped-in plate); covers a little marked, top edge slightly chipped and creased, with minimal conservation to the extremities; ribbon renewed; early gift inscription on the half-title; trifling signs of use; a very good copy (internally excellent).

'The Mite Merry Series'; the list of the three titles in the series (all three are books of children's verse written and illustrated by Gaze) is printed on the second page. Harold Gaze (1885-1962) was born in New Zealand, studied in London, lived and worked in Australia in the late 1910s and the 1920s, before settling in 1927 in the USA, where he is perhaps better known. His books in this series are rare in our experience. Muir 2700.
