Item #111498 Death in the Morning. Harry Carver HODGE.

Death in the Morning

Sydney, Angus & Robertson Limited, 1938.

Octavo, [vi], 183, [1] (colophon) pages.

Brick-red cloth, lettered in black on the front cover and spine; tiny burst to the front endpaper gutter (a production flaw); small light erasure near the top corner of the front flyleaf; essentially a fine copy with the price-clipped dustwrapper very lightly chipped and rubbed, with a few short closed tears to the edges.

A wealthy and respected 'monomaniac, driven by lust for power ... plots secretly to become dictator in a country bred to democracy', namely Australia. His diabolical and murderous scheme is thwarted 'by the courage and shrewdness of a few brave men.... Jimmy Dixon is a sturdy and attractive hero and his romance with the beautiful and talented Valerie is charmingly handled. The stalwart ex-pugilist Brogan, provides comedy in plenty' (dustwrapper blurb). Loder, page 114 (John is not tasked with trying to sell the item, and his synopsis is a little more prosaic: 'Fast moving thriller set in Sydney and the country with Jimmy Dixon, police roundsman for the "Chronicle", on the trail').
