Sundry Notes and Papers; being recently discovered Notes and Documents of the Natural & Instinctive Bestiality Research Expedition. Collected and collated under the title Bumbooziana ... and profusely illustrated, described and anatomised by an Artist of World Renown

Melbourne, Gryphon Books, 1979.

Elephant folio, [iv], 126 pages, being the full-colour facsimile of Donald Friend's illuminated (and illuminating) manuscript.

Quarter leather and gilt-decorated cloth; a fine copy with the lightly marked slipcase (with a leather title-label on the spine).

Oversubscribed on publication and destined to be perennially rare, as the edition was limited to only 150 copies numbered and signed by Donald Friend; this is number 63. It is offered together with a copy of 'The Bumbooziana Portfolio, being some Notes by the Publisher, a Dramatis Personae by the Author together with an Abridgement of the Narrative and an Afterword by an Artist of some Renown [John Olsen]' (Melbourne, Gryphon Books, 1979). The portfolio, in wrappers, contains 4 trial pages not previously reproduced, 6 prints of full-page plates (individually numbered and initialled by Friend), one cromalin proof (signed by the publisher, initialled by the artist) plus the title leaf and 10 other leaves from the finished work. The descriptive booklet is quarto, 24 pages including wrappers, with several illustrations; it is signed by Friend and the publisher, Richard Griffin. Only 100 numbered portfolios were produced; this is number 25. It is in fine condition, with the slipcase uniform with 'Bumbooziana' (albeit with a cloth title-label). The damage to the reputation of Donald Friend is common knowledge; there is plenty of information readily available in the public domain, but it is not related to this publication. On its own merits, it remains a significant milestone in the history of the Australian book. We have sold copies in the past for considerably higher prices, which is more a reflection of current soft demand than anything else. Now may well be an opportune time to invest.
