Item #110863 'Concentration Camp Torrens Island. 1914-15'. A two-panel panoramic photograph of the internment camp for 'enemy aliens' established on a small island in the Port River estuary near Adelaide, South Australia. Prisoners of War.

'Concentration Camp Torrens Island. 1914-15'. A two-panel panoramic photograph of the internment camp for 'enemy aliens' established on a small island in the Port River estuary near Adelaide, South Australia

The large image (overall dimensions 135 × 400 mm) is on its original mount, captioned as above in white ink below the image, with the Union Jack and the Australian flag hand-painted above the top corners. It is behind glass in its original acorn-and-oak-leaf wooden frame; there are a few trifling blemishes of no account. The photograph is credited to 'P. Dubotzki' (Paul Dubotzki), one of the internees; our history is richer for the inexplicable fact that he was permitted by the authorities to retain and use his camera! This image is (poorly) reproduced in 'Interned. Torrens Island, 1914-1915' (Wakefield Press, 2014); it depicts 'the camp at its second location, at the southern tip of Torrens Island'. A copy of the book is sold with the photograph.
