George Fife Angas. Father and Founder of South Australia
London, Hodder and Stoughton, 1891.
Octavo, xii, 440 pages plus a frontispiece (an 'etched portrait by H. Manesse').
Burgundy cloth slightly rubbed, marked, flecked and bumped, with the spine a little sunned and pulled at the head; uncut top edge dust-stained; frontispiece a little discoloured by the original tissue-guard (still present, and both of them have a tiny spot of foxing or similar); a very good copy.
Tipped in on the front flyleaf (inexpertly, unfortunately) is an autograph letter (small octavo, 8 pages) signed by John Howard Angas (1823-1904), pastoralist, politician and philanthropist, a son of George Fife Angas. Dated Adelaide, 21 July 1890, it is addressed to an English relative, W. Angus. From internal evidence, he seems to be one of the sons of Dr Joseph Angus (1816-1902), Baptist minister, biblical scholar, and Principal of Regent's Park College, Oxford (1849-1893). The letter discusses the current work-in-progress, as well as Hodder's forthcoming 'History of South Australia'. Angas goes into some detail about life in the Barossa Valley; his son is now living 'at Lindsay Park where my Father resided - we bought this property from the Trustees of his Estate as I did not like it to go out of the family, being rather conservative as you know'. He suggests a visit: 'it is quite a pleasure trip now, taking a little over a month in the passage, while I was five months coming here in 1843'. The last two pages concern missionary work, the curses of Whiskey and Rum, the fearful extent of the liquor traffic & opium trade ... Ferguson 10473 (noting an erratum slip).
