Tony and the Circus Boy

London, Bancroft and Co. (Publishers) Ltd. ('Designed and produced by ARTIA', and printed in Czechoslovakia), [circa 1960].

Folio, 8 pages plus a spectacular double-page pop-up colour illustration of the circus, featuring the ringmaster and assorted elephants, monkeys, horses, camels, bears, zebras, and the circus band (formed when a large panel hinged to the leading edge of the rear board is opened out).

Flush-cut quarter cloth and colour pictorial card covers, with the front cover artwork repeated on the outside rear cover, and a two-colour illustration on the inside front cover (the main artwork is signed in the image by the artist, but there is no title or any other lettering on the covers at all); covers slightly rubbed and marked; trifling signs of use to the text, with the first and last pages tanned; short crease to the end of both long tabs that move the heads of the elephants; an excellent copy.

Voitech Kubasta (1914-1992), a Czech architect and artist, is deservedly famous for his artworks in this genre.
