A panoramic view of Cape Denison, showing the Winter Quarters of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914, but taken during the British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition, 1929-31

A vintage gelatin silver print (visible image size 237 × 509 mm), recently matted, framed and glazed (external dimensions 470 × 718 mm). Apart from a very light surface blemish in the right-hand section of the sky (not unlike a contrail), it is in excellent condition. Provenance: from the personal collection of Sir Douglas Mawson, and by descent (with a letter of authenticity to this effect). Hurley accompanied Mawson on both these expeditions; the 'Discovery' is visible in Commonwealth Bay on this return visit in early January 1931. Any image linking these two significant exeditions is rare by definition.
