Gilt-decorated red cloth a little lightly sunned about the spine; rear cover slightly scratched; half-title and last two rear leaves lightly offset; a handful of pencilled emphases and trifling signs of handling; a very good copy.

Dated 1921, and with the pencilled ownership details ('Athelney') and signature (all twice) of Edgar Bristow Hughes (1866-1951). On 9 acres 'Athelney' was built in 1858 by P. D. Prankerd; Herbert Bristow Hughes (1821-1892) bought the house for his wife in 1864; Edgar Bristow Hughes purchased the house in 1917. The author, Joseph Maria Gordon (1856-1929), saw active service in Spain, the Sudan, and the Boer War, also serving in Ireland and New Zealand. Chapters include Soldiering in South Australia; Polo, Hunting and Steeplechasing; With Lord Roberts in South Africa, and In Command of a Mounted Column. Gordon was also involved in the organisation of the Commonwealth of Australia, served as Commandant of Victoria and New South Wales, and also as the Police Commissioner of Adelaide.
