The Bookplates of William Hunter, Etcher
Hawthorn, The Hawthorn Press, 1943.
Large octavo, [36] pages (first two and last one blank) with 5 tipped-in signed bookplates.
Cloth with the large hand-coloured title-label on the front cover; small (postage-stamp size) portrait illustrations of Gartner and Hunter tipped in on the title page; a fine copy.
Number 24 of only 50 signed copies. Provenance: Edward Edgar Pescott (1872-1954), horticulturalist, naturalist, author and book-collector, with his George Perrottet-designed 1942 bookplate (signed in pencil by the artist). Loosely inserted, tipped in on separate sheets, are another two Hunter etched bookplates. The subjects are V.S. Hewett (probably #11 in the checklist, an 'emblematical' example from 1937, inscribed and signed by Hewett, a 'book collector and publisher' according to the SLV); and Sir Keith Murdoch (#26 in the checklist, from 1943, signed in pencil by the artist).
