Full dark blue morocco (over thick bevel-edged boards) extensively and attractively gilt-decorated on all surfaces, with gilt inner dentelles, all edges gilt; stamped in gilt at the foot of the front pastedown 'Geo. Robertson's Binding'; corners lightly bumped, with light impact on adjacent corners of the text block; inner surfaces of the free endpapers and the first and last few leaves foxed; an excellent copy.
The verso of the initial binder's blank is inscribed 'To The Hon G.H. Reid Esqre with kind regards. October 29th 1896'. Trove records the first newspaper reviews for this novel of station life in October 1896. We have not identified the handwriting, but it is highly likely this is a presentation inscription from the author herself to Sir George Houstoun Reid (1845-1918), at the time Premier of NSW, later (August 1904 to July 1905) the fourth Prime Minister of Australia, and Australia's first High Commissioner in London (1910-1916).
