Historiarum Anatomicarum Rariorum. Centuria I et II

Hafniae [Copenhagen], Typis academicis Martzani sumptibus Petri Hauboldt, Bibl. [printed by Melchior Martzan for Peter Haubold], 1654.

Small octavo, [xvi], 360, [8] (index) pages with 10 woodcut illustrations (one full-page) plus an engraved title page and 9 engraved plates (2 folding).

Contemporary full vellum with overlapping edges; all edges dyed red; covers a little marked; small title-label missing from the spine; joints partially cracked but firm; tiny pinhole to the rear cover and the last 20 leaves; a few unobtrusive signs of use and age, but overall an excellent copy.

The first edition of this important illustrated work on anatomical abnormalities and deformities. Another edition of this first part (centuria I and II) was published by Adriaan Vlacq at the Hague in the same year (see Gosch III, page 43, listing the Vlacq edition as a reprint, but noting that 'Denne Udgave er maaskee at betragte som en Origianludgave samtidig med den kjobenhavnske'). Two further volumes (comprising centuria III to VI) were published in 1657 and 1659.

Provenance: Tho. V. Curtis (possibly Thomas Venden Curtis, surgeon, sent to debtors' prison in 1842), with his ownership signature; with the later ownership signature of John Edgar Ker, Willoughthorpe.
