The Story of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment

Adelaide, 3rd Light Horse Regiment (South Australian Mounted Rifles), 1950.

Octavo, [vi], 142 (last, colophon only) pages with 5 illustrations (including 3 portraits from photographs) and 3 maps, plus a corrigenda slip mounted on page 53, correcting, among other things, the name of the compiler of the second section from R.H. to D.R. Douglas.

Card covers lightly (and unevenly) tanned and slightly marked; bottom edge of the cover and last 20 leaves lightly abraded; tiny stain to the bottom corner tip of the last 50 leaves; a very good copy.

Part 1, 'The Regiment prepares for War' and 'Gallipoli Campaign' (pages 1-52), was compiled by 111 Trooper Frank Mead Blackwell, who enlisted on 24 August 1914. Part 2, 'Western Egypt, Sinai, Palestine. Rewritten from the original history of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment' (pages 53-130), was compiled by fellow-veteran 127 Donald Roy Douglas, who enlisted a week later, on 1 September 1914. Pages 133-141 contain 'Additional Notes and Comments' by Roderick Andrew McFarlane, the original Regimental Sergeant-Major (see page 3). Dornbusch 380 (quoting a letter containing incomplete and incorrect information about the authorship); Fielding and O'Neill, page 232 (listing only two authors, the second one as R.H. Douglas); Trigellis-Smith 265 (repeating Dornbusch's incorrect quote).
