'Eggs-A-Cook!' The Story of the Forty-Fourth. War - as the Digger Saw It ['as the Digger Fought It' (cover subtitle)]

Perth, Colortype Press, 1921.

Octavo, [vi], ii, [9]-184 pages with a map and 30 pages of plates (including the frontispiece) plus 4 pages of plates (two each after pages 162 and 172 respectively); leaf 167-8 in the pagination is in fact a squat double-page centrespread facsimile document, verso blank.

Original overlapping green wrappers with the Battalion's colour patch, and the title in gilt in a large and decorative font, printed on the front panel; minor loss to the overlapping portions (only) of the covers have been expertly consolidated; occasional scattered light foxing; inoffensive tiny light stain to the leading margin of the last plate and the last handful of leaves; basically, an excellent copy of a most indifferent and fragile production. Very few copies could have survived in condition comparable to this one ... and even if they did, they would have to be inscribed and signed by the author to upstage it.

In the bottom left-hand corner of the frontispiece portrait of Captain Longmore, he has written in ink 'With compliments from C. Longmore 12.1.22'. The book is not identified as such, but it comes from the personal collection of Lieutenant-Colonel Alexander Thomas Paterson (1886-1950), Commanding Officer of the 39th Battalion AIF, and the author of that battalion's history. Dornbusch 323; Fielding and O'Neill, page 229; Trigellis-Smith 242.
