Ethel Marian Sumner (Maie) Casey (1891-1983), writer, artist and flyer, married Richard Gavin Gardiner Casey (Baron Casey of Berwick, Victoria, and the City of Westminster, 1890-1976) sometime engineer, diplomat, politician, governor and governor-general, in 1926. Maie's public and private duties allowed her to cultivate a 'vast circle' of friends and acquaintances ('Australian Dictionary of Biography'); her Acknowledgements page includes Countess Mountbatten of Burma, Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, Lady Diana Cooper, Sir Sacheverell Sitwell and Henry Moore; the final illustration, in colour, is by Cecil Beaton.
