With the ownership signature of Cha[rle]s Winnecke on the half-title (below a 'With the Compliments of The South Australian Company' rubber-stamp); an unrelated gift inscription dated 1928 appears on a later blank page. Charles Winnecke (1856-1902), surveyor and explorer, 'entered the Government Survey Office in 1873 and went with the North Eastern Exploring Expedition to survey the border between South Australia and Queensland, circa 1877-81' ('Encyclopedia of Australian Science'). He achieved lasting fame as the leader of the Horn Expedition to Central Australia in 1894.
